10 daily habits that can damage your vision without you noticing
Published on
Today we discuss 10 daily habits that damage your vision without you noticing and offer some tips to bear in mind.
1. Not blinking enough in front of screens
Spending long hours in front of a computer, mobile phone or television reduces blinking frequency, causing dry eye and eye strain. Short breaks following the 20-20-20 rule are therefore recommended (every 20 minutes, rest by looking at something 20 feet away, or 6 metres, for 20 seconds).
2. Rubbing your eyes frequently
Although it may seem harmless, rubbing your eyes can irritate the cornea, cause infections or even weaken eye tissues if it becomes a habit.
3. Not wearing sunglasses outdoors
Prolonged UV exposure can cause cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium. Sunglasses with UV protection are essential even on cloudy days.
4. Sleeping without removing eye make-up
Make-up residue can block the ducts of the eye glands and cause irritation or infections such as blepharitis.
5. Not protecting your eyes during risky tasks
DIY, gardening or contact sports without protective glasses increase the risk of eye injuries.
6. Overusing your mobile phone before bed
Exposure to blue light at night can affect the sleep cycle and cause eye strain, as well as disrupting the circadian rhythm.
7. Skipping regular ophthalmic check-ups
Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, have no early symptoms. Skipping check-ups can delay their detection and treatment.
8. Not following proper contact lens hygiene
Sleeping in contact lenses, not cleaning them properly or wearing them for longer than recommended can cause serious infections such as infectious keratitis.
9. Poor diet
A diet lacking essential nutrients such as vitamin A, lutein and antioxidants can increase the risk of eye problems such as macular degeneration or dry eye syndrome.
10. Exposure to particles or substances without protection
Working in environments with dust, chemicals or airborne particles without protective glasses can seriously damage the cornea.
